September Salutations! New Art, Birth Flowers, and a Touch of Autumn Magic
September is more than just a month; it's a feeling. As summer fades and autumn arrives, it's a time of fresh starts, crisp air, and abundant harvest. It's a month of transition, and that's exactly what inspired my new art for this year.
A Celebration in Bloom: The Aster & Morning Glory Print
To kick off the month, I'd like to introduce my print for September. Now that I have made a birthday/flower range, my new focus was on capturing the essence of September through its beautiful associated flowers: the Aster and the Morning Glory.
The Aster, with its sunburst center and ray of frills, is a perfect fit for a birthday celebration. The name itself comes from the Greek word for "star," and in ancient mythology, it was believed to have been created from the tears of the god
dess Astraea. It symbolizes wisdom, faith, and patience—qualities that come with another year of life.
Then there's the Morning Glory, a d
elicate and whimsical flower that blooms with the sunrise and closes by the afternoon. It's a powerful symbol of affection, new beginnings, and the fleeting beauty of each day. This dual symbolism of enduring wisdom and seizing the moment felt like the perfect way to honor anyone born in September.
Creative Challenges: A Birthstone Print?
As I delved into the symbolism of September, I also realized there are two birthstones linked to the month: Sapphire and Lapis Lazuli. The deep blues of these stones looked good together, and I couldn't resist the challenge of creating a print inspired by them.
-
Sapphire is a gem of royalty, wisdom, and truth, often associated with a rich, velvety blue.
-
Lapis Lazuli is an ancient stone with a history that dates back to Cleopatra, and its stunning blue is often flecked with gold, representing the stars in the night sky.
The combination of the deep blue of the sapphire with the starry specks of the lapis lazuli sounded so pretty. I will admit, the print hasn’t come together as I would like. Sometimes, the most beautiful ideas are the hardest to translate to the canvas! But I'm still working on it and hope to release it near the end of the month. Stay tuned for a peek into this challenging but rewarding creative process!
Whether you're celebrating a birthday, embracing the new season, or just appreciating the beauty of nature, September holds a special meaning for everyone. I hope these new pieces—from the vibrant birth flower prints to the anticipated birthstone design—help capture some of that September magic for you.
